After 23 years of leadership from President Lisa Huang, AEC is excited to announce our transition to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). This transition was based on thoughtful conversation, extensive research, and a vision for the future of AEC. Throughout AEC’s history, our mission has been to be the best engineering firm by providing superior quality and service to our clients. The AEC ESOP will maintain this mission, while continuing to build our reputation and culture.

As part of the ESOP transition, AEC is proud to announce leadership changes with the appointment of Gavin Lim, PE, LEED AP BD+C, LC as President. Lisa will remain active with the firm as the President Emeritus.

Kilbourne Run Sports Park is undergoing major renovations to become a premier soccer destination. The park will be reconfigured with a new site layout, improved parking, new grass and artificial turf fields, a championship stadium, park features, and support facilities. AEC is providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering designs to support the improved sports park. Designs include site power and lighting, athletic field lighting, EV charging, and MEP systems for the new park. Click here to read more about the exciting project.

Construction on the next phase of the Cleveland Clinic Innovation District is slated for 2024. AEC is a proud partner on this A/E team. We are supporting the team by providing lighting and technology design for the two new research buildings. AEC is thrilled to see construction start on the Rickenbacker Mobility Center. As part of the team, AEC provided plumbing and fire protection engineering designs for construction documents. Colin has been with AEC for over 14 years, rising from a Mechanical Engineer to Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Team Leader, and Principal. AEC was on site at the ribbon cutting ceremony for a new 100-bed mental health treatment center at the Ohio Reformatory for Women. This exciting project supports staff in providing mental health and behavioral health care for women at ORW. AEC provided electrical engineering for the building, which includes new technology for circadian lighting systems. Click here to read more about the exciting project.

Big changes are coming to the Kingsdale Shopping Center on Tremont Road in Columbus. The City of Upper Arlington broke ground on a new $85M, 150,000 SQ FT Community Center last week after several years of planning and design. AEC provided fire protection and technology engineering design services for the new center. Click here to read more about the exciting project.

April 2023

AEC was on site for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to witness the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Dry Dock 4 Modernization project. After three years of construction, and a cost of $191M, the 100-year-old dock is ready to receive naval ships to further support the U.S. Navy's mission.
AEC is proud to have provided mechanical and plumbing engineering designs for the site utilities systems to support the Dry Dock. Our staff put in over 3,900 hours of manpower on the project. Congrats to all team partners, from design to construction, on this historic project.

AEC was honored to accept the Society of American Military Engineers Kentuckiana Post “Excellence in Small Business Award for AE Services”. The award was given during the Kentuckiana Small Business Workshop in Lexington, KY. AEC is an avid supporter of SAME and is proud to support Federal Agencies on projects across the country. Congrats to Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects and Moody Nolan on winning the American Architecture Award for 2021 from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies for the Energy Advancement and Innovation Center at The Ohio State University. AEC provided MEPT engineering design for this new high-performance, energy-efficient building on West Campus!

AEC and our joint-venture partner, emersion DESIGN LLC, received EXCEPTIONAL ratings on our final performance evaluation for a chiller repair project. The work was highly specialized involving a series of complex systems spread over 9 buildings in a 450,000 sf complex. Great job to our engineers and the project team for completing this difficult project for the USACE Louisville District.

The results are in, and AEC ranked #94 in Consulting-Specifying Engineers Magazine for 2021 MEP Giants. The 2021 MEP Giants list highlights the top 100 companies in mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection engineering. AEC has previously ranked #99 on the list and we are thrilled to see our name move up in the ranking. Ranking is based on the Total MEP Design Revenue for the previous year.

We are pleased to announce that AEC is being awarded a firm-fixed-price, IDIQ contract with a maximum amount of $25,000,000 for AE services in support of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing small design and engineering projects primarily at the Public Works Department Crane area of operations. We are excited to continue building a great relationship with NAVFAC through this contract.

AEC is pleased to announce the addition of former Adena Utilities Engineering, Inc. employees to the AEC staff. We are extremely pleased to welcome Lynn Walker, Principal / Sr. Mechanical Engineer, Matthew Walker, Sr. Mechanical Designer, and Karen Richey, Contract Administrator to AEC.
With the addition of these engineers, we are excited to open the new AEC Cincinnati office, located at 10250 Alliance Road, Suite 118, Blue Ash, OH 45242, adding consulting services to include utility engineering systems for industrial, power generation, manufacturing, petro chemical, and energy fields. The new utilities team brings over 30 years of professional engineering consulting services in the private and federal markets to strengthen AEC’s overall capabilities.

The AEC-emersion Joint Venture, along with Barge Design Solutions, received an EXCEPTIONAL CPAR for our work at the Military Free Fall School in Arizona. The team worked on three connected projects, combining 14 buildings under this one new large facility. The reviewing officer commented “Overall, this AE team has truly taken the time to understand the Military Free Fall school and how each committee interacts with one another. They have created a combined space that flows extremely well and functions for all of their needs. The A/E has strong leadership and management skills.”

Join us in welcoming several new staff members to the AEC Team! Nathanael Albaugh, PE, Electrical Engineer, joined us at the end of March in our Columbus office. Nathanael brings over 12 years of electrical design experience. Christopher Monnich, IT Specialist, joined our Columbus office on April 5th. Chris brings over 20 years of experience in the IT industry for system integration and infrastructure implementation. Steve Hoerig, PE, PM/Sr. Electrical Engineer, joins the Cleveland office in mid-April. Steve has over 12 years of management and design experience in various industries. Steve joins us after relocating to Cleveland from Austin, TX.

The team earned Exceptional and Very Good ratings for quality, schedule, and management. The reviewer commented "The AE was extremely responsive and able to provide the required data with very good quality on an expedited timeframe. The AEC-emersion DESIGN LLC team received another great performance rating from USACE Louisville for our work on a building renovation at Wright-Patterson. The evaluating officer commented "AEC Emersion have consistently provided thorough documentation which included innovative solutions to maximize efficiency of the complicated mechanical zoning, they have analyzed multiple alternatives and provided recommendations on constructability of new air handling units that would minimize construction disturbance to building occupants." AEC received three excellent client reviews this month. From the USACE Tulsa District, we received Very Good ratings for our work on an HVAC Ventilation/Free Cooling and Roof Repair project. The contract officer commented "AEC put together a good team to prepare the plans and specifications for this project. The quality of the design was very good… The charrette and design review meetings were very professional, timely, and informative. The management team stayed flexible to the User’s needs during the entire design preparation phase."
From the NASA Langley Research Center, the AEC-Emersion JV received Exceptional ratings for our work on a Preliminary Engineering Report and Conceptual Design for the Structures and Materials Complex. The contract officer commented “AEC-Emersion has performed exceptionally well across the board on this task but it has been the Quality of their work that has made them shine the most. The contractor proposed means and methods for meeting our requirements that went beyond what was required in our SOW… Their technical competence combined with their unique ability to build a great rapport with our researchers combined to result in a series of exceptional quality deliverables for NASA.”
From the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources, we earned a 95 / 100 on our evaluation for mechanical work under the Statewide Lodge Improvements project. The contract manager stated “AEC has been great to work with. They worked closely with CMR, Lodge and DNR staff to determine the best design approach which would provide ease of maintenance and standardize the equipment with current availability. While requiring some expansion of the wall openings this design approach saved the project a substantial amount of money bringing the GMP well below budget.”

WOW! The new lighting for the Ohio Supreme Court Building is really making a statement! This historic building has been under construction for the past two years and an exterior lighting upgrade was part of this project. Congratulations to the City of Columbus Division of Fire on the Opening of Fire Station 35 on the near east side. The new fire station is an $11.5 million, 26,750 square-foot facility that contains four apparatus bays, a watch room, partial basement, administrative office and 15 sleeping rooms. AEC provided MEP engineering services for this new station.

The AEC-Emersion JV just received our interim Contract Performance Assessment Report from USACE Lousiville for our work on the new Military Free Fall School in Yuma, AZ. We are excited to share that our team received EXCEPTIONAL ratings across the board! The manager commented "Overall, the AE Team has truly taken the time to understand the Military Free Fall school and how each committee interacts with one another. They have created a combined space that flows extremely well and functions for all of their needs. The AE has strong leadership and management skills. They have been very proactive in having PDT identify risks for formal documentation and resolution through the use of risk management forms. This has helped eliminate or bring awareness to potential concerns early on in the design phase." Congrats to our project team and thank you to our subconsultants for a successful project!

AEC provided full MEP engineering services to Lawson Companies. Congrats to Lawson and the entire project team on a great project that provides an affordable living community in Virginia Beach. AEC received an overall "Very Good" rating for our work on our NASA Plum Brook Station Facilities Horizontal Communications Infrastructure project. Work involved engineering design services for the installation of a fiber optic ring around the entire Plum Brook Station facility. The data network will provide reliable service to six major station-wide systems. Construction cost was $8M. Congrats team on another successful project at NASA!

AEC received an Exceptional/Very Good rating on our recent performance report for a medium voltage installation project at Ft. Sill Army Base in Lawton, OK. The project concerns installing substation interconnection at two substations on the base. The comments from the base project manager included, "All work requests were addressed expediently and to the full satisfaction of the Corps… The Contractor has utilized effective communication skills to actively understand information provided by the Corps and facilitate successful completion of task order requirements. All feedback and/or questions conveyed to the Contractor by the Corps were addressed clearly and in a timely manner. The Contractor has communicated proactively to help resolve unforeseen issues identified with the scope of this project."

AEC received a Very Good overall rating on our recent performance report for an HVAC and Roof Repair project at Tinker Air Force Base. The comments from the base project manager included, "AEC put together a good team to prepare the plans and specifications for this project. The quality of the design was very good. … The AEC project manager was very professional and customer focused. The charrette and the design review meetings were very professional, timely and informative. The management team stayed flexible to the User's needs during the entire design preparation phase."

AEC received a Very Good rating on our recent performance report for the Ft. Sill AIT Complex Project. AEC provided design for the food storage, preparation and service equipment for an Army Training Dining Facility that serves 1300 people. The comments from the base project manager included, "AEC continues to have very good execution of their statement of work on the awarded task order. They always go above and beyond to get the information needed to meet all requirements. The customer is extremely pleased with the performance and quality of the products."

Another AEC project has achieved LEED certification. Congrats to the team for the new Hampton Circuit Court in Hampton, VA on achieving LEED Silver Certification for USGBC. The AEC VA Beach office provided MEP engineering services for the review of designs and building energy analysis during the construction phase for this new three-story, 73,700 SQ FT facility.

AEC is providing MEP engineering services for an exciting and much talked about project at The Ohio State University. The project renovates an existing space into an open flexible space to house the new eSports venue at OSU. The space will accommodate computers for open play gaming, team practice, and coaching as part of a first-of-its-kind comprehensive eSports program. AEC is part of two projects teams providing A/E services for Columbus Metropolitan Library. The first project is for the construction of a new library branch in Reynoldsburg. The second project is for the demolition and construction of a new library on Karl Road in North Columbus. AEC is responsible for MEPT/FP engineering designs for both new libraries. These are our first major projects with CML!

AEC is starting fresh in 2019 after finishing a busy 2018. We submitted a total of 194 proposal qualifications to over 50 clients; plus, countless more fee proposals. We started 203 new projects between our three main offices and wrapped up several large multi-year projects. What a year! We are looking forward to a new year and new projects!

The City of Columbus held a groundbreaking ceremony for Fire Station 35. This is the first new station for the City and features special decontamination areas to protect firefighters from spreading harmful toxins from an emergency scene. This exciting project well have a lasting impact on the community and on the health and well-being of fire responders for the City. AEC was responsible for design of the MEPT/FP engineering systems. AEC worked closely with the architect and City to help realize the goals of the decontamination area and other special features within the station.

Congrats to our VAB Office on earning the Merit Award for Excellence in Development Design for our work at the Icon at City Walk complex. The award was for Best Multi-Family Commercial Housing Project from the Hamptons Roads Association for Commercial Real Estate. The Icon at City Walk project converted a 23-story bank building into a 300+ unit luxury apartment building.

After 8 years, we are wrapping up the finishing touches on the City of Columbus Dublin Road Water Plant Expansion project this month. What started as a project conducting assessments of the existing facilities and building systems, turned into a full design project. Our team performed assessments of the mechanical and plumbing equipment, provided recommendations for improvements, and then prepared construction documents for the improvements. It has been a long, complex project but we are happy to have been on the team for this project!

AEC is starting fresh in 2018 after finishing a busy 2017. We submitted a total of 193 proposal qualifications to over 80 clients; plus, countless more fee proposals. Our JV team brought in two new IDIQ contracts and we started 198 new projects between our three main offices. What a year! We are looking forward to a new year and new projects!

The Franklin County Sheriff and Commissioners broke ground on the new Franklin County Correctional facility this month. The first phase of this project includes 900 beds for inmates and will cost roughly $175M. Future construction will lead to more than 2,000 beds and closure of the downtown jail and the Jackson Pike jail facility. AEC was responsible for electrical and technology design for this new jail. AEC recently learned that the John R. Maloney Health and Wellness Center in Columbus achieved LEED Silver Certification! AEC was responsible for all MEP engineering designs for the new 21,500 SQ FT medical center which was constructed in 2013. Congrats to the City of Columbus and everyone involved with this project! Brandi Downs is an electrical engineering student at Ohio State University and is on track to graduate in May 2019. Lucas Taylor is an electrical engineering student at St. Louis University and is on track to graduate in spring 2019. AEC's article "Validating Energy Models at West Point" was recently published by the Society of American Military Engineers in the May-June Issue of The Military Engineer magazine. The article focuses on a complex energy assessment and audit project at USMA's West Point campus. The engineering team used creative methods of steam measurement to collect accurate energy usage data. The data was then used in a comprehensive report that provided recommendations on improving the steam system serving a specific area of campus, as well as other energy-improving recommendations. Construction on the Delta Faucet Headquarters Addition in Carmel, IN finished in late January. The $15 million project added 80,000 square feet to the headquarters. Engineers from the AEC Columbus and Indianapolis offices began work on this project in 2014 were responsible for all MEPT/FP engineering design serivces as well as construction administration services. The Indianapolis Business Journal covered the Ribbon Cutting ceremony and overall project in a recent article.

AEC was recently awarded our first task order under a contract with the USACE Tulsa District to perform mechanical engineering design services at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma. Our team will assess current systems, identify issues, and create a Design-Build RFP package for HVAC system upgrades. This will be the first time AEC performs work at Tinker AFB. We pride ourselves on our growing Federal portfolio and look forward to more projects with the Tulsa District.

AEC is starting out the year on a positive note… We received our CPAR Evaluation for work completed on the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences Energy Engineering Analysis Program for USACE Huntsville. We received great feedback including Exceptional ratings for scheduling and management. The scope of work required Level 1 Energy Surveys and Studies to identify energy-savings opportunities and develop technical inputs for future d/b RFP packages. The contracting officer stated “AEC produced survey reports of very good quality, identifying and defining the energy-savings opportunities, including a description of the existing conditions, the proposed measure to reduce energy consumption, and estimates of cost and savings to demonstrate the investment opportunity.”

AEC provided MEPT engineering design for the recently opened ADESA Chicago auto auction center. The 167,000-square-foot facility is the “most integrated, customer-centric and technologically advanced physical auction location to date” for the company; which is owned by KAR Auction Services. The facility features amenities such as mobile iOS applications that allow dealers to pay for cars, request post-sale inspections, and have gate passes emailed to their phones. AEC’s work included designs for a new HVAC system, make-up air units, exhaust fans, lighting, electrical power, and telecommunication/data systems. Auto Remarketing magazine featured the new facility in a recent publication.

AEC is excited to share that the new Rickenbacker Air Traffic Control Tower project was recently highlighted by the air traffic controller contractor, Dynamic Science, Inc. (DSI), in their quarterly newsletter. DSI shared a brief history of Rickenbacker AFB and thanked the project managers for their "functional expertise and tireless efforts during the entire process." The 3rd Brigade Combat Headquarters at Fort Bragg recently achieved LEED Silver Certification through the USGBC. AEC was a proud member of the design team, providing professional services for the Plumbing, HVAC, Electrical, Telecommunications, and Security Systems. AEC is proud to announce that Columbus Fire Station #3 achieved LEED Gold Certification with the US Green Building Council. AEC provided M/E/P/T/FP engineering design services for the new fire station which also temporarily houses Columbus Fire #2 while that station is under construction. The new fire station #3 is 26,000 SQ feet and construction was completed in 2015.

AEC recently learned that a Compressed Air Systems Repair project performed for NASA Glenn Research Center was accepted; completing our work on the project. Our team of engineers provided designs for compressor and dryer equipment, auxiliary systems, piping, and associated controls. Our team received high praise for the design work we provided on this project. NASA’s GRC senior project manager had this to say “As of August 1, 2016 NASA has taken acceptance of the SA-24 Service Air Compressor and Dryer system, effectively completing the scope of the FY14 Central Compressed Air System Repairs – Phase 1 project. I want to thank everyone involved with the project for contributing to the completion and success of the project. As a project, we were fortunate to bring together such a talented and responsive team that began with the design and followed all the way through systems commissioning. The project’s engineering and construction teams performed seamlessly – our special thanks to both. The efforts of everyone are greatly appreciated.”

Congratulations to AEC Indiana who provided professional services for Building 2037 at the Naval Support Activity in Crane Indiana. This renovation project achieved LEED Silver Certification through the USGBC. The building provides testing laboratories, a clean room testing environment, office space and an interactive conference room.

Congratulations to AEC Ohio, who provided professional services for the Security Main Gate building at the NASA Plum Brook Station in Sandusky, Ohio. This project applied a geothermal well field and high-efficiency heat pumps to achieve LEED Silver Certification through the USGBC. The new construction building houses the main security checkpoint for the site.

On December 9th, the Gene Haas Training and Education Center celebrated the opening of their new facility with a Dedication Ceremony in Lebanon, IN. AEC provided the design services for this 24,000 SF building with flexible laboratories, smart classrooms, lecture hall, conference space, and offices. Congratulations to the COTA Fields Avenue Facility MEP design team for their part in obtaining LEED Gold Certification for the renovation of this 270,000 SF maintenance and administrative facility. The USGBC Columbus Chapter will be conducting a tour of the building on March 7, 2013. The tour will provide attendees with the opportunity to walk through the facility as well as learn about the project’s sustainable features directly from members of AEC’s design team.

AEC was selected for an indefinite delivery / indefinite quantity (ID/IQ) contract with the Kansas City District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. This $9.5 million, 5 year contract will include design services for military construction projects and studies as well as civil works projects or planning efforts.

Ben Biada, PE, LEED AP and Scott Gray, LC, LEED AP, have had their article "Integrating Lighting and HVAC Retrofits" published in Consulting-Specifying Engineer magazine. The article discusses strategies and case studies for retrofits with an eye towards reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Columbus-based Columbia Gas of Ohio and its parent company, NiSource, have announced the roll-out of their newest Demand Side Management program aimed at reducing energy use throughout the state of Ohio. "Energy Design Solutions" includes energy efficiency training for professionals plus energy efficiency consulting for project teams working on the design and construction of small commercial facilities. Educational seminars teaching design strategies to achieve at least 30 percent energy savings will run through the end of 2010 with sessions in Cleveland on October 14, Cincinnati on October 27, Cedarville on October 28, Toledo on November 9 and Columbus on December 2. At least 10 more dates and locations are currently being planned and will be announced in 2011. Applications to receive the no-cost energy consulting services are available now through the end of the year from program partner Advanced Engineering Consultants, Ltd. / emersion DESIGN. The natural gas utility expects this program to meet the continuing education requirements of at least 250 professionals throughout the state, and hopes to assist over 25 different project teams through energy efficiency consulting by the end of 2011.
