AEC was part of a design team that was retained by the Cincinnati Art Museum to prepare construction documents and provide construction administration services for the renovation of its historic Art Academy Building. This marks the first stage in the implementation of the Art Museum’s multi-year renovation and expansion plans. Currently the more than 180 Art Museum staff members work in spaces spread throughout the building. Their relocation will open these vacated areas for additional education and gallery renovation. Through this renewal the Art Museum plans to gain an additional 15,000 square feet of exhibition space to be utilized as part of the drive to enhance the accessibility of its collections and activities. Renovation includes restoration of the existing two-story stone façade, demolition & reconstruction of the building interior, structural frame, foundations, and design of a new third floor. The project included integration of historic building architecture with new to provide contemporary spaces that support the museum’s staff. Amenities provide new space for the Director, Curators, Library, Archives, Human Resources, Development, and Finance. The new third floor provides public access to the library and gathering space for events. AEC was responsible for preparation of construction documents for upgrades to the historic structure’s HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. The building achieved LEED Gold certification through the United States Green Building Council (USGBC).
