To meet the growing demands on the fire and EMS service on the city’s south side, the City of Columbus contracted a team for the construction of a new Fire Station No. 3. The previous station was shared with Station 2 and was in need of separation.
The new Station 3 is 26,000 SQ FT and includes six apparatus bays with storage, turn-out gear rooms, and a workroom off of the bays. The bays were divided, with three on each side of a main living quarters building in the middle. The main building includes private bedrooms for personnel and officers, an open kitchen with access to an outdoor patio, dayroom, offices, ample storage space, and a watch booth. A large exercise room and additional offices and storage are housed in the basement.
AEC was responsible for design of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and technology systems for the new station. The building was designed to meet LEED for New Construction v2009. Heating, cooling, and ventilation systems were designed for specific areas within the station to meet needs and ASHRAE standards, as well as a 20% reduction in energy usage goal. Other systems included access control and CCTV, emergency power generator, automatic sprinkler system, and other standard systems all designed to reduce energy usage.
