The West Side Market was built in 1912 as a public market providing fresh foodstuffs from a variety of independent vendors. The Market still operates in this manner and is the hub of the thriving West 25th business district. The West Side Market is a Cleveland Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The City contracted a team for improvements to the Market, including building enclosure, mechanical systems and electrical systems, to address energy efficiency and provide a more comfortable and functional space for vendors and customers. All design modifications were implemented while preserving and/or restoring the historic character and aesthetics of the market. The project team created multiple bid packages to address these issues. Major Bid Packages included: (1) Upgrade vendor station plumbing fixtures and drainage piping and repair known water leakage sources into basement; (2) Provide building enclosure repairs and air barrier for Main Market Space and Install new mechanical equipment.

AEC provided mechanical and electrical engineering service for the project. AEC prepared options to improve the heating, cooling, and ventilation throughout the market space. Engineering services also include an electrical service upgrade to the Market to accommodate the thermal comfort upgrades. AEC reviewed existing drawings, reports, and energy usage information to determine the best approach to improving the HVAC systems. AEC worked closely with the City and Architect to determine the best solution and provide engineering drawings and construction documents for the improvements.
