In an effort to modernize the library network, the Columbus Metropolitan Library replaced the 1980’s Karl Road Branch Library with a brand-new library that more than doubled the size of this branch. The new 41,192 SQ FT, two-story library was designed to have an open and flexible high-ceiling main space that guides visitors to the upper level, where quiet spaces and collection areas for adult programs overlook exterior gardens. The second floor also features a computer lab and teenage book collection. The ground floor houses meeting rooms, support functions, homework help area, and a large children’s area.
AEC provided engineering design services for the mechanical, electrical, plumbing/fire protection, and technology systems. The designs include roof mounted DOAS system and Heat Recovery VFR system, an automatic sprinkler system, power distribution, LED luminaries, lighting controls, fiber optic service, public address system, access control, and security video system. The ductwork system utilizes lined ducts and duct sound traps to reduce noise transfer and provide quiet atmospheres.
