The Franklin County Commissioners office undertook a multi-year effort to construct a new correctional facility to replace the existing correctional facility in downtown Columbus. The new facility is being designed and constructed in phases to allow for transition to the new facility to happen more quickly.
Phase one of the project constructed a 429,500 GSF facility, designed for 850 beds with the capability to be expanded, development of all core support areas and all special needs housing, and the requirement to build as many maximum security beds as possible.
Phase two adds 163,359 SQ FT and approximately 1,300 additional beds, all programmed female housing, a staff parking desk, and centralized inmate program space.
AEC is providing electrical engineering design services for this project which include 15KV power distribution system and switchgear equipment; 15KV emergency generator plant (diesel fueled) to support the entire facility in the event of a total utility outage; a solar photovoltaic energy system to offset 3-5% of the facility energy usage, dual primary feed, dual transformer main-tie-main style until substations; 480/277V to 208/120V low voltage transformers; metering in distribution panelboards; UPS equipment; and circuit breakers. AEC is also providing designs for interior and exterior lighting equipment, lighting controls, telecommunications systems, public address systems, technology systems, lightning protection, and emergency lighting and power. The facility includes 21 technology rooms which AEC provided engineering designs for.
