ODRC and OFCC originally contracted at A/E team for the master planning efforts to replace the existing Residential Treatment Unit (RTU) housing and Outpatient Treatment offices at the Ohio Reformatory for Women with a new RTU/Severely Mentally Ill facility. The goal of the project was to provide mental health services for all female inmates in the state diagnosed with an acute or chronic mental illness requiring specialized treatment and separation from the general population. The new RTU Housing is divided into four units varying in capacity from 16 to 36 beds and provides for levels of treatment. The housing unit is supervised from three officer stations. The new Treatment center has a reception and waiting area for outpatient services and includes a library, group rooms, interview rooms, staff offices, conference room and support facilities.
AEC was responsible for design of the electrical, fire alarm, fire protection, and telecommunication systems for the new facility. The project design included sustainable and efficient systems where possible. The lighting system utilized new technology called Bios’ Lighting, which provides access to the closest biologically beneficial spectral content light possible for periods when patients do not have access to natural sunlight.
The project was awarded The Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Project, recognizing partners for innovative and industry-leading accomplishments in implementing decarbonization, energy and water efficiency, or waste reduction projects/practices.
