AEC was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Tulsa District, on behalf of Sheppard Air Force Base (SAFB) to repair and upgrade the fire suppression system by removing and replacing the existing fire alarm system while adding mass notification functionality, and addressing life safety egress elements in five high-bay technical training hangars known as “Hangar Row”. The buildings range in size from 90,000 square feet to 134,000 square feet in floor area and were built between 1941 and 1952.
This project provides the necessary infrastructure modifications and additions to upgrade the existing wet pipe sprinkler systems, including replacing existing sprinkler heads with quick-response ordinary-temperature type heads, providing additional heads as required, and connecting the suppression systems into the SAFB water system. The existing fire alarm systems were removed completely and replaced with a Monaco combination fire alarm and mass notification system.
AEC provided project management services and mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering services.
